Do you upgrade with or without stock?
I'm just curious what works for you all. Currently I'm trying to expand my stock and upgrade and I'm losing more than I'm gaining xD On one hand its causing me to go broke now but on the other hand I don't want to have to buy mass quantities of items later on. I doubt I'll ever fill my entire shop but I'd like to have 2 of 1000 different items eventually. :/ Let me know what you think works best thanks :)

Well when i used to mall in a large spot, i found that chucking tons of items in there didnt work out. Keeping the number of pages low and putting in appealing items works better in terms of sales. For example, with toys, it's probably better to go for odd-looking plushies rather than something ordinary like a red koy keyring (assuming it's not a quest item)

I like to keep my shop filled, so I upgrade as I am adding stock. I guess that is probably backward from how most people do it. But if there is something that I want to add, I need to upgrade to make room. So during Advent, Daily Dare, stuff like that...I slam down upgrades like crazy.

I always buy stock first and then upgrade but that is because I like a full shop. I have used my small shop to figure out what sells well and it makes me use my shop space better. I never want to be filling my shop with junk so that it's full. I agree about the unusual items thing. I don't like that many mall shops have what everyone else has. I go to malls to see things I can't see anywhere else. I love the shops that have tons of things I've never seen or that are really expensive (usually those two go together). Perhaps that is just me. Do some people expect mall shops to have everything? If they do then I'd put one of the crazy priced items and use the space for other things. Is there a need to have 75 Apple Juices priced at 5,769 NP? Mallers are the Neopians that have millions of neopoints so theoretically they should have the best shops with the coolest stuff. Also, I rarely if ever look past page 5 in a shop -- it's just too much. The only time I go beyond that is if the shop stock is so interesting or non-typical I just can't wait to see what else they have. Also, if you are going to have a 10 page shop please put the pages at the top so if I know my item is at the end of the shop I can just go there instead of wading through all those pages. Hope that was helpful. ~ Mimi (Please read my Guest Book: Requesting Guide Help) _____________________________________________________ Mimi's Ménagerie: Healthy Tastes Good Here! http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=temps_bons

Well for me, upgrading has been a daily thing. I am about a moth old but my shop is size 53. I guess I want to play with the big boys as soon as possible so its a fight to get bigger. On a side note, I hardly ever use my restocking money to upgrade. I try to keep prices fair which leaves me with little np left over. What I do is play games daily and get 20k so thats what I use to upgrade, I just past the point where I cant get two upgrades out of 20 so it will be getting harder. Wow, this is really interesting! I didn't know that less pages worked better. That's something I'll have to think about! :) I thought more pages was better because it meant more items to show up in a wiz search. You're right, though, who wants to click through endless pages? I never go past 5 or so when I'm shopping, either. :P I do feel like I need to have a large variety, though, to be a responsible member of the mall I'm in. However, I stocked a page of cheaper items (sell under 500 np) just so I'd have things in every price range and I've noticed those items rarely sell, so I've been thinking about discontinuing them. As for stock verses upgrading, I think some of it depends on what size you are. When my shop was smaller (less than size 100), it was really important to keep it fully stocked so I had enough items to bring in the ShopWiz traffic. Also, it was important to me to keep several of the faster selling items in my SDB for quick & easy restocking, and that takes np to do. For those reasons, it was much more important to have np to buy stock and keep my SDB stocked, and just upgrade slowly as I was able. Now that my shop is bigger, those things don't matter very much. I could enlarge my shop and not keep it fully stocked and it wouldn't make any difference, so I can enlarge instead of invest in stock. However, I'm not large enough yet to stock more than 2 or so of each item, and that is a hassle. I look forward to the day when I can stock more of each item and just keep set items and more or less set prices. I'd also love to be visible in a hut, which is still a ways off, but in sight. So, at the size I'm at now (245), upgrading is more important than being able to buy stock. ~ Love books? Please visit my bookshop. :) http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=lolooma

I currently have 30 spots left but I usually like having those empty spots for emergencies. I used to have so many empty spots until I got the 1000NP & Avatars category along with my Maps & Neggs category. It really has been paying off. I love my category. I don't see myself ever leaving. +) You're in for a surprise. Your wish has just been granted! http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=1434sweet Do you need more shop sales? I always upgrade and then stock ^^. Mostly because I want to hit main market asap so all my neopoints go into stocking. Then when I have enough space for 200 items I stock it up to 50 available spots. It's been working well for me ^^.

I try and make sure my shop is on top, or near the top of my hut. If it is, theres no need to upgrade, doing so will only lose customers, so stocking gets priority. Also, I disagree with Dmitri, but that might be just to do with categories. I find that as I add more items, my sales are getting better and better. There are more items for people to choose from, and who doesn't love searching through hundreds of items that your pet can wear :O

For the most part, I don't upgrade unless I also have the np's to fill those spaces. BUT, I suppose if I stocked a category that didn't have as many different items as mine does, I wouldn't care so much. As it is, my shop STILL isn't large enough to stock all the different items I stock at one time.

I like to upgrade so I can expand in my shop size, and to be able to add new items =} I am always finding new cakes that I just 'must have!', and then I need more room. Currently, though, I am just using my Guide to add items as I fill a category up. So right now I only have items of the categories I have done, but in the process I have repriced items that needed it, added more variety, and am selling good quantities. If I could, I would just upgrade a whole lot more then stock as need be. Having the extra space is nice; yet the number of free space can be intimidating. Then the urge to stock comes. So I think it just varies from person to person. I like adding new items too much.. =} I do not like to stock junk, and I only sell items that I think are pretty or cool looking...And I have noticed I have more sales because then the prettier items are not so far back if I have 20 pages and half of those are well known junk items. =D
