I'm planning on opening a neopets graphics website, but I havn't got much spare cash to hand over to web hosting companies (especially not $10 a month for a decent host, plus $40 set up fee). I was doing some research and I read somewhere that its possible to host a website from your own computer. We have an old, slow, good-for-nothing spare computer, so I was wondering if it would be a good idea to clear out all the private files and such (I am aware there could be some potential security risks), and host the website from that computer? If anyone knows anything about the subject, any input is very much appreciated. Thanks :)

huge recipe for disaster. Running a server like that requires a very powerful firewall and you risk getting your entire network breached. Not to mention, your internet service provider will end up having a cow since most of them dont allow you to host high bandwidth sites.

Okay thanks for the advice :) After reading a few guides and listening to you, it sounds like its going to be a real pain in the neck. I also need some softwares, my computer needs to be running 24/7, and getting a stable IP Address could, by the looks of it, could be tricky, and much more costly than web hosts lol. Looks like I don't have much choice if I want to create a website but to throw money in the web hosts direction :P

Yeah, well if money is the issue, you can easily manage it though. A fairly basic package costs 4.95 a month. That's less than the cost of a movie ticket. But to be honest, it's gonna be hard to get it off the ground. I myself had a heck lot of troubles until i started the counter service.
