Rant about people not following the leash law and hating an entire breed of dog.

That drives me batty too. Its the fricken owners not the dog that is bad *angry* Out front she is always leashed... I let her run the back but she stays in our yard, even to bark at someone passing by she stops dead at the border of the grass and doesnt cross it... unless the other dog is unleashed and comes to play. Most of the neighbors on the block let their dogs run out back (its nothing but field behind our houses) and they all tend to meet up in my yard so cynder can play zoom zoom with them. She is a JRT too, I have people actually cross the street to stay away from her, but she is rather vocal LOL We made the mistake of teaching her to sing and talk to us, so now even when you pet her she growls out of happiness and wanting to play. People who dont know her think she is going to eat their face off when they see me play with her. But she is pretty fierce when it comes to protecting the little ones. She doesnt even like me to disipline them. I'll have to remember to come back and post a pic when I am on my own computer.
In Toronto(canada), people think jack russel terriers are like that too. It's quite funny when someone freaks out like crazy (like they've seen godzilla or something) when I'm walking my cute little JRT.
Yea, people forget they are Terriers, and even though they have a prey drive like no other, and will kill mice and rats like it's nothing, that doesn't make them HUMAN aggressive. Terriers are very driven, high energy dogs. I hate it when a dog attacks another dog, or a dog attacks a cat or rabbit and people say "What if it was a child!? Thats whats next!" It makes no sense! Terriers are SUPPOSED to have a high prey drive, thats what they were bred for, and a lot of them tend to be dog-aggressive. Doesn't make them bad, just makes them what people bred them for. Labs retrieve, Huskies pull, Hounds scent, Terriers kill small animals.
However, it is possible to breed temperament in animals
Yea, thats what I mean by backyard breeders. They don't temperment test, they don't helth test, they inbreed, etc. If you take a dog with a bad temperment and breed it not only are you a (insert bad words here) but you will likely produce more dogs with unstable temperments. The fact the American Pit Bull Terrier is one of the most over-bred dogs right now doesnt help either.
They can do that? unsure I don't like that they can do that.
Oh yes they can unfortunately. Its called Breed Specific Legislation, or BSL. After I got Lars, my dog, it was intoduced in my state and I drove 3 hours to the public bill hearing to speak out against it. The bill was basically a carbon copy of the other laws they have in some states. They enact the bill and then take away people's family pets and kill them. If anyone ever tried to take my dog away and kill them, they would have to take me with them, let me tell you. Luckily it was rejected 17-1. Here is a video that I HIGHLY recommend you, and everyone watch. Nearly makes me cry but is too good to not watch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yrr-pUW-lmU
However my biggest frusteration is the dogs that bay at the moon all night long
Yea, I don't understand how people can throw their dogs outside to sleep in the dirt. They bark and howl obsessively because they are not exercised, not trained and get no stimulation. Lars only barks when I get him all riled up and excited for a toy haha. I am glad to see so many logical and dog-loving people here and that I don't have to defend myself or my dog! :D *sigh of relief*

I'm more of a cat person myself, but a co-worker has a Rott-lab mix and so many people fear him because he has the Rott colouring. She did research one day on bad breeds and found it was the over-bred toy dogs and poodles that had the highest attack rate here. The worst dog I know is a pure golden retriever. Supposedly a calm breed LOL He's constantly jumping his fence , getting in other peoples garbage and chasing other dogs and kids. His owner doesn't seem to care too much either. I wish owners were more responsible when it comes to their bad dogs

I had to have 6 stitches on my left arm and still have a nice sized scar. I am not afraid of dogs though, I know they won't bite me for no reason :)

They just don't get media attention because nobody wants to hear about the little Chihuahua who bit a kid in the face and took his lip off or the Pomeranian who killed a baby (true stories). Little dogs are allowed to get away with many behaviors larger dogs are not, like resource guarding, jumping up on people, growling etc because people think "its so cute". Wouldn't be cute if it was a German Shepard. Silly humans.

I agree with you completely on so many parts of this conversation. We raise English Mastiffs and when they are outside, they are always under our control. Two of our Mastiffs have grown up to be Service Dogs and we are training another right now. We live on 5 acres but when people come over, they rarely know that they are here...well, until they walk in the house and 208 lb. Tucker walks in the room...lol
