I hate MM food/sweet shops that stock full pages of <100NP foods (packrat food). It's okay if it's interspersed throughout your shop but a full page of it is a waste of valuable shop space and makes shops look junky. I am of the opinion that if you get to main market without quality stock it was just a waste of neopoints! Yes people will visit your shop but they won't buy much if your shop looks like a MEGA-HUGE newbie shop. Just leave some spaces blank if you can't afford to make all of your stock look good.
(Sorry for the off topicness but) 100% agree! I HATE seeing the gross foods/omelettes/fish things in food shops! I did a food shop independently for a while just for the purpose of having a food shop without all that gross stuff (and, of course, I wanted to see what selling foods was like). Back to the topic at hand. Foods and Sweets being separated is good, imo. I think that all those items together is overwhelming and sweets shops just have a charming look/feel about them and tbh, if I was shopping I'd head for the Sweets over the Food anyday (partially because of what Mimi and I were ranting about above!). The banner is fine but, as someone else pointed out, your Collectibles is misspelled ("Collectables"). I personally did not get the "huge" vibe from the banner maybe because it flows so well (if anything it felt a lot smaller than like Roo banners or TML banners). I like that the categories are what stands out rather than the title or faerie quest sections. I'm not sure about the text not being readable (it is quite clear to me). The "About" section, though, I found to be a bit too much though. I think the mall page should only have things pertaining to the mall and if people want to know about members then that is what userlookups are for. Another thing is the Avatar Items part. I just don't like HAVING to stock certain items since. I don't do categories anymore with Faerie Quest items for that reason. And I feel that Backgrounds go better either by itself, or with Wearables rather than Grooming. Okay, that is just what I think. GL with your mall! (:

Collectibles isnt spelled wrong, you can spell it either way actually Oh and about the <1000nps foods, its ugly, but I've heard that they are REALLY popular and sell very well. I know food shops who never used to want to add those cheap/junky items, but then they decided to try it... buy them for 1-30nps, resell for 100-1k nps and they strangely sell well :P
Oh yea XD I thought they were talking about Collectables vs Collectibles :P
Yeah one is American and the other is British. It's annoying for me since i know both so when im talking to Canadian/british friends I often use the british spelling and with americans, i use the american version. And speaking of spelling, i had someone make fun of me for mispelling that word "collectibles" when i posted a comment about NB "add" on my petpage lol

[strong]I edited everyone's posts a little ...just took out the parts that I wasn't commenting on [/strong]

I hate MM food/sweet shops that stock full pages of <100NP foods (packrat food). And I feel that Backgrounds go better either by itself, or with Wearables rather than Grooming.
I am pretty sure the unreadable text is because I am almost 40 (next year) and though I can zoom in, it may be nice to just bump up the font 1-2 more px :)...Or not, *lol* *shrug* I like the idea of having a snippet of info about people on the mall page. I recently added a column for our mall page that has when people started playing. Our mall is 7 years old and most of our members have been playing Neo for a long time. That was a big selling point for me in joining this mall! I am not worried it will disappear in a week! Avatar items: I had the Avatars/Packrat category for my mall and every single item was overlap into some other category. I tried to pick items the other shops in my mall didn't carry but still overlapped with codestones/paintbrushes/bottled faeries... Basically, if it is already part of your category and it is an avatar item you are expected to keep it in stock like a faerie quest item. I think that is what is meant. Am I right? (Robyn, I get you on the craziness of FQ item stocking and that is another reason I love food, LOL!) As for the grooming category placement: I don't think grooming goes great with anything, really. Neither does clothing. Grooming/Wearables -- If you put it with wearables it makes sense only because grooming items are obviously not wearable. Backgrounds / Grooming -- backgrounds are clearly wearable and would bring in those shoppers to the grooming category shop which is good. I can't see grooming or clothing being a big sellers other than for FQ, however, I've never had a grooming shop so what do I know? I think others can weigh in on this better than I. Just decide now what your standards are for the grooming shop. If you get a Wearables shop who hates grooming they will probably only have the FQ items and mark the prices so they don't sell (just one scenario).
Oh and about the <1000nps foods, its ugly, but I've heard that they are REALLY popular and sell very well. My point was that a [strong]full page or more[/strong] of that kind of stock is just ugly, LOL! I was trying to make the point, though I failed, that you can have those items in your shop just not rows and rows of them together. Spread them out instead of concentrating them in one spot of your shop. I can't tell you the amount of time I spend trying to make my rows look neat/organized in my shop. My SDB is full of filler items to make my rows of 4 similar items stay together, LOL! Anyone who goes to my shop and it looks unorganized can tell I need to restock -- like right this second! After I restock the the coffee/tea/slushies/etc. start a row and end a row. I just don't sell some items because they mess up the way my shop looks (baby food and milkshakes is the easiest example that you may be familiar with). Quirky? maybe -- effective sales tool? you betcha! A $5 shirt selling for $100 looks better (and will sell) surrounded by $100 shirts. If the entire store is $5 shirts selling for $100 I just leave. It also makes restocking my shop easy as pie since my first two pages are full of <1K items, BONUS! Was that a better explanation of my rant? *lol* ~ Mimi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ temps_bons graphics ~ http://www.neopets.com/~Mimi_Miaulement

Nilrem, best of luck with your mall. I hope you're able to find a good co-manager. For me, the main banner is too large, but I do love the colors on it and my eyes were drawn right to the categories. I think making the paint brushes/faeries for everyone optional would be best. I know I wouldn't want to stock paint brushes with my food items. Faeries, sure, but paint brushes do cost a lot to stock. I'm looking forward to seeing how your mall progresses. :) As for splitting up drinks between Food and Sweets/Bakery? Yikes! Texas and Perpette know what I'm talking about. Just make sure you're clear on how you split the items. I like Mimi's idea of Smoothies with the Food and Health Food and Slushies with the Sweets/Bakery. I think I stock about 100 items for under 1,000 nps. I get most of these from Neopian shops so I make a good profit. I don't sell many 1 nps foods. I did for Halloween, though, and made a small profit. If I do get any 1 to 20 nps foods, I sell them at 99 nps and they do sell pretty fast. That's nice, but not enough profit for me to spend time restocking on a regular basis. Mimi, I really like how you look at how your items affect how your shop looks. I do sell the baby food and milkshakes, but I like your insight and might consider doing away with them. Right now I'm concentrating on expanding my overall unique items and only putting in new food that is over 1,000 nps, because it's easier for me to restock and the profit margin is higher. But how attractive the food looks is another good thing for me to consider. Thanks! I'm planning on doing a shop overhaul in the next month with a shop banner and offering more attractive stock.

@ lnbs and others- thanks for catching the mistake with the spelling of Collectibles. Ill be sure to fix it soon. ----- @ Dmitri- Im not sure, I dont remember posting that in a thread before. I did look at the banner size of several malls to get a sense of what I wanted to aim for. I ended up going a little past it, in the end. I think i only mentioned the size of the banner I was working on in personal convo, but its possible I said it before. ----- @ temps bon- I already said thank you on the upgrade thread but thanks again for the time and feedback you gave:) . MM Comment I didnt mean for my comment about MM upgrades to seen snotty. I guess although I didnt think of it when writing, it could be seen that I was implying a snide reference to other mall owners, however I had no one in mind and wouldnt know of any off hand. My rational for being explicit about reaching main myself was to let anyone that might be interested in joining NP Mall that one of my goals is to be a main market mall and there wont be exceptions. I thought this would be a good point for people to hear, b/c Ive seen several people like Dmitri and others offer advice to new mall owners not to make exceptions if your goal is to be main market b/c then theres potential for people to be unhappy. It was innocent overall the comment (I think you knew, I just wanted to explain). Food Category Its good to hear some positive things for the split. I think its worth giving a shot. As far as drinks its funny b/c when choosing which category would get slushie or smoothy, I did try and place them in the most fitting / appropriate category. I guess I had them backwards in my mind, b/c based on the names and images I think your right. Ill switch them when I update the banner. I also agree with trying to minimize overlap, which is why I avoided overlap categories. Rant Initially I would have argued that perhaps cheap items do have a place in shops. As others mentioned these can still make nice profit. As an example I sell sand and those cost under 10 np but i sell for almost 500np and it adds up. I think you clarified yourself pretty good in the 2nd reply. I agree its probably not necessary to stock a whole page of cheap items, but a row or 2 will give buyers a cheap option and allow you to profit off them. Perhaps stocking too many options of the same type item just spreads the purchases out but doesnt make more, I could be wrong since I stock a small category. I like your perspectives on the appearance of your shop and how your stock effects it. Its funny you mention keeping your stock in neat rows b/c I do the same. Atm ive removed my neggs and am intending to add paint brushes for my mall, so the even rows are gone but they will be back. I also keep many filler items in my sdb, I can imagine it must be hard for a multi page store like food. Banner Thanks for the compliments :) Ill prob resize it to 1400ish. Ive done so in my shop and it looks fine, ill just need to resize it for real in photoshop. With the width I kind of like how 700 fills the hut and shops. ----- @ hearlessness Thanks also for the positive feedback on the food split and banner :) About The about section it wasnt meant to replace a lookup, its just so if a mallmate visits the page perhaps they can have a general appreciation for who they are malling with. I thought it would add a community vibe, that they wouldnt necessarily get if they had to open each userlook (which might not have "about" type info) or mail everyone to chat in the mall. It is 100% optional, people can remain anyonomous if theyd like. Avatar With the avatar items i assumed that each shop would only have a couple items to stock to cover the petpage links, so requiring them wouldnt be asking much. However I understand that people might not like this so thanks for pointing it out. I will make a note on the petpage that this it can be discussed. Some items like in my example of training, there is a codestone avatar, but I cant choose not to stock codestones or i wouldnt be covering my category.. Overall i think the small requirement is better then the alternative that one shop will overlap many, so i def encourage people to stock the ones that apply to them. However if someone is truly unhappy i dont see why their items couldnt be offered to others or those avatars removed from the petpage. Backgrounds I agree it would fit better with wearables, the reason im apprehensive is because if wearables goes with bgs then the most obvious pairing for grooming items is clothing. Grooming and clothing do need a home somewhere or then its silly to keep the faerie banner which other faerie quest shops might not want to lose. The reason I shyd away from putting grooming and clothing together is b/c the best way to market it is to list "Clothing" as the main category. In our mind clothing means non-wearable but to the average buyer i thought this might give undue traffic to the clothing/grooming shop and steal from wearables/ bg shop if people clicked on clothing expecting to dress their pet. ---- @slaygal As far as pbs and faeries, people do have the option of not stocking them. I did want to make it a requirement that everyone make a personal choice of what they would like to do, so if they dont the spot can be linked to someone else. I wanted to do this so banner links dont lead to shops without the items. Thanks for the tip on food /sweets. Ill be sure to work closely in the beginning with those shops so we are all on the same page to prevent future problems. ---- thanks again to everyone who offered good luck and gave feedback :D
