Yeah, I don't like GIMP at all but it could be because I'm used to Photoshop. (I don't like Paint Shop Pro either.) Someone recommended Serif Photo Plus to me (http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/), and I like it so far, but haven't done much with it. It is very similar to my old version of Photoshop in how it handles text and layers at least.
