So I just need to change the name right before the .exe when I re-download it and it should work. What is a good firewall to use also?
One program will not be the best of any other. To get good coverage, I'd suggest downloading the following free versions of these applications: Adaware Malwarebytes Symantec Spybot Search and Destroy Having all those should cover almost any virus/cookie/adware/malware/whatever you can accidentally download.
symantec!? that is the most garbage program in the whole world :P i suggest AVG free and btw... remember prevention is better than a cure :D [Abrar13-Virus free for 2-3 years....^^] Edit-Ya Dmitri also said that symantec is garbage. And Dmitri is the ultimate guru on this site. ^^ ~Abrar

(There are also some programs that help prevent it but ugh...those are not for me) ~Abrar

I had AVG for awhile, but it didn't really work because it skipped over a lot of things. I just recently got Avira, and it works great. It caught a lot of viruses that AVG didn't. I also use Malwarebytes , that works really good too.

No, Windows Firewall is something different. I don't think you can just change the .exe name from the start. What I've done is download the program on another computer, but don't install it. Then drag the .exe file onto a flash drive or similar portable storage media. Then you make a copy and rename it, then you drag that file onto the infected computer and then install it. Sometimes you have to do part of this in safe mode, it just depends on which virus or malware you have and how it's working. I know this is just the tip of the iceburg, but if you need full blown instructions, then that's more than I can type into a post. It can get very involved. I also run CCleaner (free program) before I ever start scanning for viruses or malware. That can make things a lot easier. Once you get the programs working, you will have to run them back and forth a few times because most malware comes off in layers. MalwarebitesAntiMalware is usually the one that finds what the others missed, but then once that has removed them, suddenly your other programs will start finding things that were hidden before. I can take quite a few times running back and forth to get completely clean. ~ Love books? Please visit my bookshop. :) http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=lolooma

Okay, I had the same problem and needed something to get my safe mode to work so I contacted Microsoft and they sent me to their site to scan my computer. It took forever (2 hours) but it made it so that I could run malware in safe mode. Here is that address: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm You want to click on FULL SERVICE SCAN (though it doesn't find everything it should find a good bit) ALSO... If you are not logged in as an administrator on your computer (do you have to log in on your computer at the windows prompt? as a guest or even someone elses' name?). The admin is the only person who can use programs in the safe mode sometimes. EDIT: Plan to spend up to 8 hours cleaning your computer if it is a large hard drive because you'll be running multiple scans and safe mode is super slow!! _____________________________________________________ ~ Mimi's Ménagerie Avatars ~ http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=temps_bons&misc
