the best way to buy a computer is go to a place where the associates arent paid commision, tell them your budget and your needs and they will help you. Plus prices often vary from place to place
How will you know that they aren't paid in commission? So that means Future Shop, Best Buy, etc. aren't good places to buy your computer?
Best Buy and Future Shop both brag about how they are uncommissioned so yeah, i usually shop there @killercars5000 cheaper isnt always good. at least in canada anyways. You get what you pay for. I remember i got scammed and bought stuff at factorydirect.ca (it's a discount store) Everything broke. Stuff I got from futureshop which is more expensive, it's still kicking just fine. And nowdays, factorydirect isnt cheaper and sometimes MORE expensive. reverse psychology i suppose.

Thanks Killer. 750 is not a bad price. That's just for the CPU, right? I want better speed because my computer is really outdated. I've had this computer for 5 years and my other more than that. Once I get a better job, I should get a computer as soon as possible. Does anyone here make their own CPU? Buy the parts and assemble it, stuff like that.

I'll admit to buying my computer at The Source (where I don't think they're commisioned) but I always get the feeling I'm being ripped off when I go to these places :P If there is a crappy looking dimly lit computer shop in your area, take a peek inside. It may not be the most glamorous place to shop, but they often have pretty decent deals on computers. Once you've got it home, does it really matter whether the machine came from a FutureShop in the mall, or a dodgy shop on the other side of the tracks? :P

am I blind, or did you edit in the warning to me, Dmitri? I've learnt my lesson buying electronics off the internet. I've bought two crappy laptops, a counterfeit Ipod, and a rediculousely overpriced mac. On the internet, people can get away with all kinds of crap.
does it really matter whether the machine came from a FutureShop in the mall, or a dodgy shop on the other side of the tracks?
It matters in Canada (Toronto). Unless you have friends on the inside or something, chances are, you go to a dodgy shop, you get a dodgy computer. Totally not worth it since computers are supposed to be reliable, not dodgy. And yeah, the source is usually expensive. They are the only store that states memory in MB. For instance, they use 3072 MB to make it seem big, where other shops use GB (3GB)

And factorydirect.ca is a store, despite its name, though they do have an online component both on their site, and on ebay

Staples Business Depot is good though. they're slightly expensive but their quality is amazing. And sometimes, when they have a sale, it's often cheaper than futureshop. So far, they have failed to disappoint me :P
