I'm making a series of freebie mall banners for users.
Here is the one I just finished:

I personally hate real images in the background of mall banners. Don't know why. Also, the background image is too bright, its hard to see the categories.

I don't mind the real image and think anything that is different is good. Basically it is good but you do need to make the background to the words darker so the text is easier to read. Also, you should make sure the images are securely inside the boxes and all the same size.... attention to detail is important in graphics because the human eye can detect things like that and it affects how you feel about the image without really registering in the brain why you don't like it or it bugs you.

I don't mind the real-life background, except it would be better if you used a neopets on instead. I think that the word "fall" is too big (or it should at least be in a different font, to differentiate from the mall name), and you did a poor job of erasing the little white dots around the images. I don't like the little pink edge surrounding the fairies, and the text and images blend in too much to the background. But overall, it's pleasing to look at.

I really like it, but you should make the buttons darker (less transparent). And "Fall" should be a different font or smaller or something. I thought it was the name of your mall and was confused to what's going to happen when winter comes.

I agree with everybody here, and I also think that the items are too big for the buttons, and that to me looks tacky and unprofessional. Also, what's with having several items for food and collectibles, and only one for the rest? It makes it look unbalanced, especially in that upper left corner, with all the text and then the several items. That and the text doesn't fit into the buttons either. I agree, the pink outline around the faeries is a bit much, but maybe if it was orange to blend in with the theme? Or maybe just get rid of it all together.
That's just my take. :)

I like the concept of the banner.. but..
1. the transparency is too transparent.
2. you should use 2-4 items for each button
3. neopets styled images are always better.
4. because you made the banner you'll think it's perfect and great. you have to imagine what the banner will look like if you we're about 8yrs old with no graphic sense of graphic design intelligence.
