Changing from wearables/grooming to food/drink?

Ok, here''s the deal: When I opened up my own mall I've thought about switching to Food/drinks or Bakery/Sweets. But I remained in Wearables/grooming because I didn't want to have to learn a whole new category. Every time the food/bakery category opens up, I consider switching, but I'm too scared to "break out of my shell." so to speak. Well, now our food vendor got frozen and I don't think she's joining again. I would like to switch, but I'm scared o.o Quite frankly, I'm getting sick of stocking wearables/grooming, and I'd like to switch but... Maybe hearing some positive (or negative) feedback would be good.... Post away!
Thanks for the tips everyone! I was thinking, now would be a great time to switch with HPD day coming up, that way I could stock up on food while selling out my wearables/grooming. I think I'm going to give it a go! Thanks again everyone! (If you'd still like to add more input, go for it! I'm still all ears for negatives and positives! And wow Mimi!) EDIT: I'm also worried about getting a substandard person to stock wearables/grooming and looking at their shop and being like "If only I could stock it again...."; that's another one of my fears.... but, like I said I need to break out of my shell. *** Grooming, wearables, backgrounds, clothes, Fire & Air Faerie Quest items! http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=nioe_yemar&misc Owner of The Rainbow Fields Mall!
I am really happy for you. Also, food is a coveted category in every mall. HPD is great! All of the food/drink shops are good on HPD but do your research now on prices. Organic foods are a hot seller and definitely stock them but you don't have to stock them at SW prices for them to sell. They are on the first page and the first two pages of a shop is the most important since that's about all people look at. Also, since your previous category is also a coveted category I don't think you will have a problem finding a replacement. As far as that goes, I am truly shocked at the people who apply for mall positions. It amazes me that they will apply without restocking their shops first which to me is a no-no and would make me say a definite, "NOWAY!" I might even consider adding a 30-day Probationary Period with possible dismissal without explanation clause in my mall rules. ~ Mimi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ temps_bons graphics ~ http://www.neopets.com/~Mimi_Miaulement

I've been stocking Food and Drinks since June, and I think it's great. One thing I've noticed is you have to stock a LOT of items. I have found a pretty good relation to # of different food items to increase in sales. Sales really pick up nicely on the weekend, here's my sales for this past Friday and Saturday. Sales Summary for : 27/11/2009 (Friday) Items sold: 138 Total Sales: 835,161 NP | Costs: 551,683 NP | Profits: 283,478 NP ( 51.38% ) Sales Summary for : 28/11/2009 (Saturday) Items sold: 133 Total Sales: 730,019 NP | Costs: 478,696 NP | Profits: 251,323 NP ( 52.50% ) That's without NB ads. To get this amount of sales I have 16M worth of stock (I also keep backups in my SDB). It takes an investment, but the returns are nice. The big chunk of profit is expensive gourmet foods (10k+) I'm still adding more and more food each day, and notice a nice increase in sales along with it

I stock Food/Sweets and stuff sells as long as you keep the prices near sw prices. No one really looks at the other pages, so I try to cut back now. When you stock, try to stock a lot of specific items. For instance, stock a lot of the same type of cupcake (like a bori cupcake in all of the flavors). People will occasionally come and buy all items in pairs.

Okay, so I went looking through Jelleyneo's list of food shops, and out of the 26 shops I saw, I chose these shops: The Crumpetmonger, the bakery, Neopian health foods, chocolate factory, Neopian fresh foods, smoothie store, slushie shop, super happy icy fun snow shop, faerie foods, pizzaroo, hubert's hot dogs, jelly foods, exotic foods, refreshment (shop), and the Igloo to stock in. Any of these that you would advise against, or switch out with the other stores? These are the stores that looked appealing to me, and had the most appealing food (to me, at least). Are these good shops to be looking at for HPD? Also, any other advice/tips would be greatly appreciated! *** Grooming, wearables, backgrounds, clothes, Fire & Air Faerie Quest items! http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=nioe_yemar&misc Owner of The Rainbow Fields Mall!

I like to browse through lots of the much larger food shops (though of course I don't actually buy from their shop) for pretty, somewhat generic items that would most likely attract buyers. I rarely restock on half price day so I wouldn't know about that, but you like someone already said, you should stock lots of sets as the consumer often buys several of each type and it makes your shop look neater. Owning a small shop, you should definitely wiz-price if you can get away with it. (I'm hoping this makes sense) for example: my shop wiz category (the L and Y section) sometimes has inflated prices especially for more expensive items, so I can get away with having a high mark-up on an item while still being cheapest on my list and therefore make a good profit, and most people will buy several more items before leaving.

^^^^^ Im curious about this too. I just rs a little in one shop and thats it. Maybe because you arent familiar with all of the prices, you should just focus on one or two of the shops *unsure*

I RS from every food shop in Neopia -- Tropical, Altador, Shenkuu, Kreludor -- everywhere and make a good profit. It takes researching prices before HPD to get good mark-ups but most every thing is a markup to a good price on HPD. Yes, don't even worry about SSW -- just SW category for your name so you can make more profit. I would research specific items that no other food shop in your SW category sells (this takes time but you'll figure it out). Go for variety in items and prices. Food isn't like weapons or petpets where you lose thousands of nps on items you RS from the shops (not on HPD anyway) -- you really have to buy what you like / what looks nice and that's about it. Also, go for items not everyone sells since people know what the basics cost (milk, water, veggies, etc.) . When you get a large shop (size 200+ then worry about having a mall-looking food shop) -- go for profit now and SW pricing. Give yourself about 3 months of stocking and you'll be making a millions! *lol* ~ Mimi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ temps_bons graphics ~ http://www.neopets.com/~Mimi_Miaulement

Yay! HPD is over! Category: Food | Items: 750 | Qty: 1,497 *groans* Now I have to input all these into the portal.... *gets to typing* *** Grooming, wearables, backgrounds, clothes, Fire & Air Faerie Quest items! http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=nioe_yemar&misc Owner of The Rainbow Fields Mall!

I hope you just select your shop-front, copy and paste it into portal. You don't have to type anything other than what you paid for the item and the price....was that what you meant? Yep, I got a ton of items yesterday too. Lots of cheap items unfortunately but a handful of expensive ETS items, yay!! ~ Mimi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ temps_bons graphics ~ http://www.neopets.com/~Mimi_Miaulement
