Questions from the not-so-techno-savvy
Thanks in advance to all who take the time to read through this and even more thanks to those who respond! WEB Browser Questions: I have looked into Safari & Opera and would love some feedback from the group about them. 1. I have a PC with limited hard drive so if I download one or both of these, can/should I get rid of IE and firefox? 2. Does the Neopets Toolbar work with either program? Does Tarla's button have the same glitch as in firefox? 3. Will I have to download plug-ins to play neogames? (3D life player, Flash Player, etc.) 4. Are there any wonky things with sites when not using IE or firefox? Will these two programs still work with my financial statements, etc. -- seems like a dumb question but I want to be sure. 5. Any other topics you'd like to cover would be great because this is nerve wracking for me....breaking away from Microsoft IE was bad enough but leaving firefox too? Oh my! PC Questions: Anyone willing to work with me on freeing up my hard drive (about 1-2G)? I've been getting rid of massive amounts of unused programs on my computer but I am afraid to delete certain programs because I don't know what they do, how I got them or even if I use them. I think maybe I'll need them in the future but I don't have the disks to reload them and I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars to get them back (I bought a pre-configured PC from DELL). Also, there seems to be entirely too many programs running in the background ALL THE TIME and I don't know if I need all of that stuff or need to buy and install more RAM. And if no one is willing to help with this...can you point me in the direction of a site(s) that could help me decipher all of this within a 40 hour week. Right now looking up every little thing on the web is time consuming and I don't feel comfortable that I know what I'm doing. Finally, if this is beyond the scope of this board and/or no one can help, who the heck do I call for these sorts of things? My computer warranty and technical support has expired but I'd be willing to hire someone. The hourly rates for technical support from DELL and MS seem outrageous to me!

I'm not a computer genius, but I'll do my best to help out. 1 - I would at least keep IE, a lot of things seem to not work on Safari or Firefox. As for keeping Firefox, it all depends on whether you actually use it or not. 2 - I don't know sorry. 3 - I don't know shockwave plugins, 3D life player, etc. But you will need to download Flash. But its easy as 123, just go here: (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/) and click on "different operating system or browser?". 4 - As I said before, keep IE just in case it doesn't work. 5 - as I said, don't get rid of ur other browsers, at least not IE. Then if it doesn't work out, you can just un-install it. As for PC Questions, I don't have very much idea about all that, so I'd be scared to give advice lol. But I'm sure there are plenty of very smart people on Neomallers, and Yahoo Questions is also very handy for that sort of thing. Hope that helps :)
3. Will I have to download plug-ins to play neogames? (3D life player, Flash Player, etc.)
yes but if your hard drive is so small, chances are you dont have a 3D graphics card and you need that to play them. neopets toolbar only works with IE/firefox You can also try running disk cleanup. Click on my computer. right click Local Disk C: choose properties and click on disk cleanup As for background tasks, click start, then run, type in MSCONFIG and click on the startup tab and uncheck those that you dont use

I have download happy family members :( so I had to create an admin account and these programs: 570MB Adobe Acrobat Pro; 595 MB QuickBooks; 343 MB MS .NET Framework 2.0 & 3.0 Svc. Pk2; 215MB MS Money. These are the major memory hogs. I do have the 3D graphics card and we can play these games using firefox. IE7 creates error messages every time I use it so I thought of uninstalling it and reinstalling 8 to see if that will fix it. I have done (and continually do the disk cleanup & defrag) all of the above but the MSCONFIG is worrisome to me because I have messed some things up in the past. Can I paste what I have in there that I think I don't need for specific advice? ~ Mimi _____________________________________________________ Mimi's Ménagerie: Healthy Tastes Good Here! http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=temps_bons

3d life player never worked for me, it's a Vista/FF thing, but I'll never give up my FF. I found some games would not work for me in Opera, so I stopped using it Does disk cleanup actually work? I always thought it was something Bill Gates put there to take up space :P

Also check out a program called CCleaner it's a free download. It will clean out stuff you don't need, plus give you a good look at your start menu, plus clean up the registry. Make sure you read everything it cleans before running it and uncheck the items you don't want cleaned. I'm like you, I like a clean system and sadly enough I clean and defrag each reboot.

I have to do this about every three days because I have 1MIL+ KB of temp files. Defragmenting your hard drive is also important to do on a regular basis. ~ Mimi _____________________________________________________ Mimi's Ménagerie: Healthy Tastes Good Here! http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=temps_bons

I have used CCleaner but it was some time ago. I became concerned when I downloaded one of these cleaners and got a worm on my computer that stayed in quaranteen for almost a year before it was cleaned! I can't remember what the name of it was, ding dang it! ~ Mimi _____________________________________________________ Mimi's Ménagerie: Healthy Tastes Good Here! http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=temps_bons
