What kind of image do you all use for your banners, etc.?

I'm making myself a new shop banner, and I'm wondering how you guys save your image files, and if there is really any difference. Like is .jpg any better than .bmp? I always have just saved as what my computer defaulted to in the past, but is one format better? Also, is this GIMP i keep seeing mentioned on here easy to use? I use MS paint for all my graphics, cause it's really easy for me to understand. I'd like to be able to do something fancier, but not if it'll take me 3 hours to make a banner for my shop.

Thanks, I'll try jpg if its smaller.. Could you maybe direct me to your GIMP banner? I don't get very involved in making mine.. Usually just grab a picture off neo and add some text to it. But MS paint you can't do anything fancy with the text... I'd love to see an example or a few... I'm working on getting my shop stocked, then I'm going to need to make a bakery and candy banner, cause that's the category I'm switching to...

The big one in my shop was made with GIMP. Took all of maybe 5 minutes to do the actual thing. The longest part was the text/pictures *lol* But mine is kinda *dung* because my image host made it all pixelated D: Would look much better if it looked the way it was saved on my computer and is better than paint at least. .:| Luck |:. http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=heartlessness_&banner

Well, I wasn't sure which you meant... GIMP or the category.. Category isn't too much expanding, though.... Cause I've done bakery before even though it was a long time ago.
