Website Hosting Suggestions?

Hey everyone :) I have been thinking of starting a graphics website of my own for a while now, but havn't been sure if I want to put money down on it. Does anyone know of a host that would supply enough bandwidth to support my site as it started off, that doesn't cost more than around $5 per month, and doesn't require that in order to get the price of $5/month, I have to pay 100 years in advance :P Also, does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep my website secure, if I do go ahead? Don't want hackers and such destroying my site and affecting the members. And finally, while I have a pretty good grasp of HTML, I don't know an awful lot about scripts and all that stuff, so is it realistic to open a website, or do you think I would have a lot of difficulty, and my website will fail miserably? Thanks very much :)

I don't think you need to know a lot of html. Most of the website design programs now are WYSIWYG (in other words, you just kind of drag and drop and stuff, no coding needed). For the things you do need to code, you can always search online for a tutorial for that specific need. As for hosting, I love Homestead and have been with them for like 10 years. I have a life membership, so I don't know what it costs now, but I do know they have a much better built-in web design utility than most of the other sites out there and it offers more features. I also like that you are not tied in to templates and stuff like that, you can design free-form from scratch if you want, and do anything and everything. It's WAY better than Yahoo hosting. They used to offer a 3-page website for free so you could try the features and site-builder software. I'm not sure if they still do that or not. I too would be interested to see what kind of security is needed for a website out of idle curiosity. If the pentagon and homeland security were cyber attacked it makes one wonder... Remember, what you pay is what you get. And if it's too good to be true, it usually is. Webhosting is no cheap thing to do and all those places that offer it for less than $5 a month is going to be crap. Expect to pay at least $10 a month for a GOOD quality host. some people even say dont pay under $20 Google php free host if you want. As for security, I use two layers of filtering. Obviously, i cant post it here so you'd have to mail if if you're interested.

As for filtering, I have no idea what that is, or how it works :P but I'm sure I'll figure it ouy eventually lol.

I urge you to try for more than a $5/month service. For $10/month Hostgator has always been good to me. No down time ever, unlimited domains, and live customer service that's very helpful and friendly. I've been with them for about 2 years now

I've been with them for about 2 years now[/quote] Thanks for the advice, I'll keep that in mind :) as I said, I'm gonna start off small, the hosting company I'm looking to join allows you to pay by the month, without charging you an arm and a leg, so I'm going to start off with them for $5 a month, then when/if my website ever takes off and I start having problems, I'll find another host.
