Shop Background - Asset or nuisance?

I find myself in a bit of a dilemma at the moment and would appreciate if the more experienced mallers could enlighten me on this one =) I have been in a mall since I was a wee little size 50, starting off in the lowest branch and now finding myself at the top with the rest of the cool kids. Since around mid-October, I decided to make my shop more visually attractive by adding a side background (the kind that goes along the right and left borders of the screen, not the full background). I was a Neggs & Training shop at that time so I guess it was more of a fancy addition than anything but now that I've picked up Grooming and Clothing (the non-wearable type, aside from Fire Faerie Quest items), I feel it's more important than ever to appeal to customers as it seems to be a slightly less profitable category. I've received positive comments about the overall shop while advertising and some of these people became regular customers. Getting to the point, the mall leader made it clear today that backgrounds were unacceptable, unless you're a seasonal shop, and that they should be taken down. I feel it is beneficial to my shop and my views/sales have been doing great (for a shop of my size/category) lately despite a recent category switch and recent mall move. However, I could be wrong and this is where you, the experienced maller, come in. What is your opinion on this? Is my background an asset or a nuisance for my shop and the mall as a whole? If you're curious, here's a link to my shop: http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=cerberus_neo Your insight would be greatly appreciated as I'd like to get a "professional opinion" before bringing the matter up to the mall leader. If people generally feel it would be better to take it down for whatever reason it may be I will, no questions asked. I enjoy the way my shop looks at the moment but I can compromise if it's for the better of my malling community.

Hhhmm... i'm personally not a huge fan of shop backgrounds myself. I have used them occasionally myself though and found them to have made little difference either way to my sales. I certainly wouldn't say that I feel yours damages sales, and it's not disgusting or distracting. It could possibly slow down shoppers page loads though, which could be something to think about. Your post is actually helpful, as it brings up positive and negative aspects of shop backgrounds. It will be up to me to gather these factors and weight them out before taking a decision. Thank you for your input =)

Once you end up in a hut, your extra code will show up on the page. And yes kirsty is right about the page load times for people with older computers. I use a background because I found that it attracts fans. I did a Harry Potter way back and got tons of fans telling all their friends. (Twilight would be good right now) Now I do it because it makes my shop memorable. Here's a link... http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=atlantissix can't hurt to get a few extra hits eh;)

While I completely understand your desire to make your shop more attractive the background is distracting to me. I have never been a fan of tiled backgrounds though so I may be biased. Also, the mall leader is the leader. You already have the item background and that is a decorative affect. Maybe experiment with making that more attractive because she allows that. I brought this same issue up when I was in the mall and got no where so I doubt she has/will change her mind. She and the mall managers have discussed it repeatedly and have come to the same conclusion each time. I even offered to make her some backgrounds and item backgrounds everyone could use so the shops looked the same (following X-mart's example). She said no. This is just a sacrifice each of us has to make when we join a mall: giving up some control over our shop stock and appearance. ~ Mimi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ temps_bons graphics ~ http://www.neopets.com/~Mimi_Miaulement

if you can do a good job then go for it otherwise dont. i had a bunch of people commenting on my layout so im betting the benefits outweigh any decreased speed. but that should be minimal since even the cheapest comps nowadays are fast enough.

I'm currently using a neopets background and am anything but a graphics artist so I guess making my own is out of question. Seems from the comments I've gathered so far that a background isn't really much of a nuisance, nor an asset and that it is therefore not worth the bother over pure aesthetic reasons. If I were on my own, I'd keep it, but I'm not, so that settles the deal. Thank you everyone that responded, your opinions are very much appreciated =)

Yeah, we have a no background rule in our mall, but we only enforce it if it loads slowly on my computer. And my computer is decently fast, so I've only had to bring it up with one mall member ever. But whether or not a rule SHOULD be enforced, if its a rule you were aware of when you joined the mall, you need to respect the wishes of your leader. If you can convince her otherwise, you can always put it back up later. But if she's asked for it to come down, you need to take it down or find a mall that allows banners. :/ Because it IS her mall. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ~~ Come visit my map shop ~~

I would say no to a background. When I visit people's shop and they have a background and a banner... it really slows down my compute, forcing me to go out of their shop as soon as possible.
