Splitting up the Wearables Category - good or bad idea?

I'm finding myself all kinds of overwhelmed and I'd let my shop stock slide a great deal over the last month. It might just be that it's Christmas time and I'm busy in real life and things will be back to normal for me come January - but I doubt it. I really think that the category has gotten to be too big.
I used to keep a steady 13+ pages of Wearables in stock, but it got insane for a while. I find that around 9 pages sounds to be the most reasonable...but I don't know that I can do the category justice at nine pages.
I'm thinking of splitting the category into "Wearable Clothing" and then "Backgrounds and Trinkets" with Accessories (hats, purses) being shared between the two categories.
People who've done this - did you find that it hurt your sales? Or did you find that it improved your sales because it made dealing with your stock that much easier for you?
