The news today

In the news today: A few items around the site today have been retired! Yes, we selected 15 items at random that will never be restocked or given out again. Anyone any idea which items? Just curious :)
Forums:

I'ma wait about a year with these...they will eventually become a mill...
1. Don't ever F with Dmirti 2. Janikowski couild never make a 74 yard FG! 3 Don't ever F Dmitri

I was offline when the news came out so missed them at reasonable prices. I picked up 3 to forget about in my SDB. That's all I'm willing to risk at these prices. I'm sure I'll lose nps on them - I always lose on intentional investments. (Though I've had some gallery items inflate nicely, so I guess it evens out.)

Unfortunately I didn't catch this all soon enough :) I'm just glad I already have that stamp in my album!

melaka I have to speculate that this is retired...how is this item going to go down in value?...maybe temporarily but besides that it has no where to go but up in value!
melaka I have to speculate that this is retired...how is this item going to go up...maybe temporarily but besides that it has no where to go but up in value!
There will certainly be a decrease in price before it increases again. It stocked for eight years as a r30 Stamp. There are TONS of them around. The initial hype is the only reason they inflated so quickly. It'll be a while before they're back to where they are now.

Something has happened! SLOTH FIRES HIS RAY GUN AT YOU!!! Your Hair-Gel is turned into a mound of sludge! LOL! Thanks for the info (if only I'd read it sooner)...maybe we should resurrect the twitter idea because it would have been nice to get a tweet about this...instead of all of my pizzas and tomatoes being raided before I had a clue. There will be investors after a few days will give up and end up selling. Also there are the broke investors that will need NPs and start selling. And lets not forget the ones that will see the deflation and panick and sell with the fear of possibly losing more NPs. But then again ..it really only takes one superpower investor to go "look i'm taking this off the market" and buy every single one in existance :D :D ------------------------------- See my new screenie petpage? Prices fluctuate largely based on supply vs demand. What's happening at the moment is a lot of opportunists are cashing in on some easy NP. Some 'short timers' that got in early are happy to sell at anywhere between 15k and 99k. That the item is going for 99k or up doesn't mean that they wont continually lower their prices to beat competitors. While they're competing, 'long timers' are happy just buying heaps and waiting a year or more before selling. These people generally have a lot more NP and can afford to push the prices about. This is what benefits the 'short timers', because they will generally have a buyer at well above the price they'd otherwise accept. You've also got market influencers. Those that decide on a max price they'd be willing to spend, and buy any of those items below that price (for as long as their NP holds out). This is why you'll sometimes see the different searches on the wis displaying prices between 15k and 30k, with an odd one that has a lowest of maybe 80k. And that lowest price has 50+ up for sale. (*looks at Tincanman* :P) In short, everyone has a max price they'd be willing to spend, a price they'd like to sell at, and a limited number of NP to buy the items. All these opportunists are competing not only for purchases, but also for sales. You should understand that at this point, there are few of these items leaving the economy; nearly all this activity is based on people buying for a later sale; to reintroduce it into the economy at a later time. So the price of the item is in no way a real indication of 'supply vs demand'; because the supply is being limited by those people who have stockpiled the items and wont release them until the price increases. In the weeks/months to follow the current activity, these people will be trying to make some NP back on their investment so long as they can sell at a price above what they paid for the items. So the price will drop to a point where sellers don't want to compete further, and buyers don't want any more at that price. I'll give a few examples of items that went retired many years ago. All of these were in similar situations as what's happened now: Grapes: Initially sold in shops for only a few hundred NP. Retired maybe 7-8 years ago. Went up above 25k after retiring. Current price; just over 3,000. Peach: Much like the grapes, but a little more rare. Retired in the same batch. Current price; nearing 10,000. Kickin Kikos: I don't know much of how much or where this book was sold, but I got a heap of them after they were retired for 10,000 each. They now go for between 250k and 500k. They were retired in the same year as the grapes and peach. Green Blumaroo Keyring: Same year of retirement as the above. You could buy heaps of these for 25-35np each. Now they're selling for about 500. This isn't a one use item. This item did not have much activity upon being retired but it was still there. Blackened Banana: These were retired sometime after the above, maybe a year or two. You can still buy them for less than 100np. But this is because TNT did not properly retire them; they're still given out by the Grumpy King as a prize. When they were retired, the price went up near 800np before settling down to about 300np for a few weeks. You can still pick these up occasionally for 1np each. All of these items saw the same movement (but to a lesser extent) as what's happening now. Collectors buying and selling. And all the hoarders end up competing with each other for sales later on. Most of the people who would actually want to use the item, see the inflated prices will decide to spend their NP elsewhere. So the higher the price a retired item gets, the less likely it is for that item to be used and thus leave the economy (provided it's a one use item). This in turn means that most of the inflation we see is driven by the activity gained by the retired item from hoarders rather than 'true' purchasers. This is also compounded by the price and number of items available at any time. Many of the one use non-advent calendar items that make it above 10k naturally (after the initial flourish of activity), tend to gain renewed interest from hoarders and this pushes the price quickly up even further; and from here it rarely goes back down. So you'll understand when I say that the more people that know about a 'good investment' the more likely it is to become an item that rises in price quickly, and also the less likely it will be for the price to drop far. But this also means that there's going to be a lot of competition for sales later on. To counter this is attrition; those people that get frozen, forget passwords, or just give up on their account (ignoring those that make the effort to pass items to friends after leaving). And this takes years, and it works with the natural increase in price due to demand from 'true' purchasers. It's much easier selling a HTS item for 500k when there's only two sellers. When you're competing with 15 others, each of whom have 10 - 200 of the item in their SDB and can be argued down in price occasionally.. you'll be forced to wait a while. So what I'm really saying is that you can make of these items what you want. The price will likely go down some, but it's mediated by your own interest in the item ('you' meaning everyone). All the prices do go up over time. Advent calendar items generally double each year (on average). These items will do much better. The best advice is to monitor the prices; buy when you're happy to, sell when you're happy to. It really works much like the stock market = you don't lose any NP unless you sell at a loss. Wait long enough and you'll get your NP and more back. Hope this wasn't too much to read through... :)
