Laptop :/
So I was poking around neopets and my laptop shuts off and now it won't turn on. The fan comes on and the light inside my power button will too, but the screen stays black and it will make a little noise and click at the same time then it shuts down. It's an Acer "Aspire" I think and has Windows Vista. According to what I've been reading, I'm going to need a new hardrive. The thing is less than a year old too *angry*. So frustrating!

I think you will have to get a new laptop. :( You can have someone check your hard drive and see if it is salvageable. I had an Acer Aspire laptop, too, that crashed a year after I got it. I was so mad. I was playing Sims at the time and I could never get it to boot up again. I even tried using some reinstallation CDs. I took it in to GeekSquad and they told me my whole hard drive had crashed. They were able to recover some data and put it on CDs for me. I did buy a new hard drive, but the computer still didn't work. I just don't think Acer is a reliable brand. I went and got a MacBook instead. :) I'm not a computer expert, but maybe someone else knows what is a reliable brand to get. I hope it works out. Edit for correction: My laptop crashed two years after I got it. Not as bad as one year, but horrible as far as computer longevity goes.

Always buy a reputable brand like Toshiba, Apple, Sony, Samsung for big purchases like laptops. Acers are always cheap (at least in canada, and it also sells in Wal-Mart!) so there must be something wrong with them and avoid buying high-end stuff from refurbished/2nd hand stores since regardless of brand, they all suck for the most part and have SOMETHING wrong with them. Yes they will cost more but you'll have less headaches. The minimum you should go for is HP And speaking of brands, avoid Comstar External hard Drives. I lost track of how many people are crying at the future shop forums because of this ComCrap Hard Drive. Go for Seagate or Western Digital. They come with great warranty and are very solid. I currently own both and have no issues whatsoever. USB Flash Drives: Avoid Kingston DataTraveller series. They're quite slow and quite a number seem to fail after some time. Verbatim ones are fast and pretty reliable too. A good technique is to check the Amazon.com reviews for the product before you buy. For cheap stuff, you dont really need to do it but for things like TVs, Laptops, computers, etc etc, it's worth a shot to see what others are saying. Even a good brand like Toshiba had a series of crap stuff that was later recalled. As for your laptop, you can try inserting the recovery disc and see if that will do anything. (insert, and then reboot the computer, press F12 or something and tell the computer to boot from the CD Drive) This assumes that your laptop gets through POST (aka the screen where it displays your manufacturer)

Thanks for the feedback! A new one is my only option, because it doesn't even show anything at all before it shuts itself down and I can tell it's getting worse each time I try. It only lasted an entire 8 months, which is beyond horrible. I'll do some shopping around to see what I can find that is actually decent.

Dude, I have a Dell. All I know is that it's a 2007 and I've had no problems (besides the fact that Vista sucks) but I got used to it. It gets my homework/surfing the net/neopets done, so I'm happy.

Okay wow. So all this time my laptop hasn't been broken lol. On that day, I took my laptop into a different room than where it normally was because the walls were being painted and I didn't want to breathe in all that paint-fume stuff. Now in this room there is a light switch that, instead of turning a light on and off, it turns the nearby outlet off and on and I didn't know it. I had my laptop plugged into the outlet while the switch had no power going to it. So, all this time my computer has been dead rather than broken. In my defence, it didn't show any of the usual signs of the battery going low before it just cut off (like the screen will dim and it will beep) but still that was quite a "blonde moment" on my part. My dad was the one who figured out because he knew what that switch did and later on noticed where my laptop had been plugged in at (he wasn't home when I moved it). So yeah, I feel a little silly now. I had been looking at new laptops and everything. But, I still have all my stuff so that is good.

I have a dell myself.. and its been working fine for the last 3 years. My friends bought an acer at the same time, and it only lasted a year and then it started giving problems. I think the harddrive might have blown, but are you sure it didn't overheat?
