[DEV] Sales Tracker II
Now that I'm done exams and my semester, the dev. of the new web version will soon start. But before it actually goes under development, would you all prefer it in Flash App or php/jscript based (how the rest of this site is made) Flash CS4 Pros: greater interactivity + interface + potential for graphical features, less load on servers Cons: could possibly lag on graphics cards that do not have 3D capabilities (most cards made in the last 5 years should though) Possibly might become a security threat if the flash file is reverse-engineered (so i'd have to double check this situation) A Flash banner i created for one of my projects. See if that lags or not http://www.neomallers.com/uploads/CABA/haiti/standalone.html PHP/Jscript Pros: good for slower computers, can be accessed by mobile devices such as iPods, blackberries, and iphones Cons: More load on servers, javascript based and might be slower processing, may have a choppy interface at first, less potential for graphics features Let me know what you think :)

Flash works for me as long as you're confident it can be safe. We already eat up enough of your server by spamming your banners everywhere. Also, people on neo should have graphics cards that can handle customization (for the most part...I have a new computer with a standard graphcis card, and it lags a little, but some of that is extreme), so they should be able to handle a flash sales tracker which would have minimal animation, right?

Flash sounds nice, if its safe :D The banner you posted works perfectly for me, but Neo's customization (like when viewing pet lookups) or KeyQuest lags SO BAD on most computers I use for neo (or all perhaps... :K) so I hope its not like that :P Actually, the problems with neo and flash are worst in FF, I've noticed. The petlookups arent so laggy in IE. @ jfrog: the only thing i'm worried about is that I might have to encrypt the MySQL database password into the flash file itself... or maybe i could make use of URLs just like the topshops page (all those ?blah=variable&filter=true junk) $_GET and $_POST but who knows. Gotta look into it further. I just started flash so yeah, not too good at it. I wonder how neopets handles those sending of scores. @ jaspeh: yeah exactly, the neo customization lags so horribly, it's not even funny

I'll jump in on the PHP/Jscript side of things, with one issue that'll probably come up because of it. If it's PHP/Javascript, then end users can make GM add ons for it to help it look and behave slightly differently if they would like. The problem with that is if there are changes to the NM interface, those scripts will break and may need to be updated / no longer be an option. At the same time, if interface changes are kept on the low end, or only as major updates, and what is updated is the way the interface is presented (graphics and such), it may be much less of an issue. On the other hand, the possibility of the above may be a leading reason to push you to Flash, avoiding the whole issue :) Also, you've probably addressed these elsewhere, just point me to the search bar if you have! 1) Will current DBs be importable? 2) Need Beta Testers? 3) Will we be able to download local copies of the DBs for local manipulation and/or backup (this goes hand in hand with the Importable bit too)? 4) Do you have a 'desired features' list, as well as maybe what current features you are planning on keeping or dropping? That's probably a big enough list right now. I love using Portal, and use a USB key to easily sync my DB between different computers :) It'd be neat to make it FTP compatible and run it off a USB key from anywhere (or just run it off the USB key to begin with, does it use a relative or absolute path to the DBs?)

Yeah that was part of the point plus flash is widely supported. 1) Will current DBs be importable? Yeah probably. 2) Need Beta Testers? Most likely. Especially to test in other browsers like Safari 3) Will we be able to download local copies of the DBs for local manipulation and/or backup (this goes hand in hand with the Importable bit too)? that might depend on the structure but i suppose i could make it export to comma delimited/cvs/excel or something 4) Do you have a 'desired features' list, as well as maybe what current features you are planning on keeping or dropping? Well we're going to try and keep everything from the old one but improve upon it (especially the graph and the ranking feature) The ranking feature is just ridiculously slow in VB6 (but then again, Vb6 is a program from like 12 years ago)

I will pipe up and say that sometimes Flash is bad in FF (3.6.3) for me, especially in Faerieland :) One other bad thing with Flash and FF is that FF does a bad job of zooming many flash applets. There may be something simple to make it work right (lots of NP games, and others, zoom fine, but many newer ones don't, what changed? I dunno, I'm no flash expert). Also, what if I get an IPhone? :)

The banner didn't load for me firefox.. could be an addon, noscript or adblock issue though. Does this mean you'll stop developing the portal app? Because I really like using that...

yeah i'll stop adding new features to it. but will only update it for glitches and that's about it. It's such an old programming environment that it's causing all kinds of issues with newer systems (possibly more on 64-bit systems) Plus it takes too much of my time diagnosing those problems too

I like that the flash will leave less load on servers, I wouldn't want more lag on sites when not necessary. I like that flash banner, it loads pretty quickly (Unlike Faerieland or the Customizing area), it is eye appealing, and gets whats needed across, which is generally how I envision The Sales Tracker II. I don't actually see the need for it to be so shiny and new graphicy. It's nice to look at, but all in all, All these sliding transitions and actually Popping up instead of appearing windows bug me to no end when I'm trying to get stuff done in a rush. Probably why I still like old programs and such where you click a button and GO there instead of watching the screen get pushed aside. Just my 2 cents :) --- Step outside, take a breath of fresh air, then look down to see if you have a new text message.
