Should I upgrade or buy a G-bomb?

Hello all, I have a little dilemma that I've been thinking for over a week now. I just reached my goal of getting enough neopoints to buy a "Ghostkerbomb" (G-bomb) which is 7.35M in the trading post. Initially, I wanted to get this item for no apparent reason. Although it might sound like there is no actual purpose, I just really want to get that item and not think about it later. Kind of like, I just want to get it over with. Then there's the other side of me is thinking that if I spent that much neopoints on my upgrades, I would have a shop size of 482. I've checked the hut and I would only be willing to upgrade to 475 because of better hut positioning. I haven't upgraded in awhile because my initial goal was to get enough neopoints to get a G-bomb and I kind of feel bad that I'm not really upgrading as much as I should since I am in a main market mall and I'm the only one who does not have a main market size. So if I used these neopoints, I would get closer to main market size. It seems like in both situations, I am either satisfying my personal intent or satisfying someone's intentions of me. I guess the question is, "Do you think that I should use my neopoints for upgrades or buy the item I so long to have all of this time?" To those that have or had a mystery island hut positioning located on the upper right side with a shop size of 460-493, my question for you guys is, "Do you think a dramatic increased of sales has occurred when you jumped to this hut location?" Thanks again for the replies. I really do appreciate it. My main interest on buying the item is not really for investment, I just want to add it for my future gallery (unretired hidden tower items). I know its very difficult and I probably won't be able to finish it but I might as well try in the beginning of my time here in neopets because it does keeps me motivated to still play this game. And if its give me super-duper neopoints in the future when I am still playing, then that's good. If not then I don't really mind it that much. Now the issue with hits in huts really concerns me more. This is why my initial goal was to get the item at the first place. Nilrem, thank you for giving your statistics. I don't think that enough hits will get me anywhere near the same neopoints I want back from spending that much on shop upgrades. However, what my mall owner thinks of me and my mall members is still a big factor on upgrading. As I said before, it comes down to either following what I want or following what people expects of me even though they have not said or implied anything. I've already neoemailed my mall owner about this and I predict that she probably wouldn't care so much what I decide but I don't know. Maybe I'm over-thinking this. LOL.

Malling is a great hobby

Malling is a great hobby on neopets, but it is certainly not the only hobby that one must have. I love my mall shop, and I upgrade it when I feel like it, but I also keep several million on hand to do things like buy items for my galleries, or to spend on friends birthdays, etc. You should not feel guilty about having other hobbies that you want to keep up with on neo. Should you upgrade you shop? Sure! Should you do it instead of buying your G-Bomb, probably not. The point of malling, in my opinion, is to have the np to do some of the things that you want to be able to do. And, if you always invest your extra np in your shop, it will start to be work instead of fun, then you won't make any np anyway.

I say but the bomb, then save save save for upgrades. (Heh, that almost rhymes :P) I went into malling so I would have more np to spend on making a battle pet. After I spend a lot on my pet, I spend a lot on my shop. It's a give and take relationship *unsure*

Looks like you've got a range of 'buy' and 'upgrade' views. One of your statements queried whether upgrading was worth it in terms of hut hits and sales, and it's quite likely not worth it specifically for you. But that benefit spread out across the mall.. then it does become worth it. Keep in mind that your mall members have already spent an amount of NP to generate income via customers. They've spent NP on upgrades which you are also gaining the benefit from. They have helped you generate the NP your looking to put towards your G-Bomb. Fair move? Only you can know what's right for you. Your mall manager, like any decent person, like most of us here, will likely encourage you to do whichever makes you happy. But I'm thinking you need some, perhaps blunt advice, from people who aren't directly affected by your choices. And it doesn't have to be 'all or nothing'. Maybe do a little upgrading, but keep a tally. Half of your generated NP goes towards upgrading, half towards your Bomb. Try to do the right thing by those that are supporting you. /What happens if you're kicked from the mall? How much NP would your shop make in two months then? This difference will help you work out how much the mall is supporting you (maybe if it is) :P

I agree with the poster

I agree with the poster above. Keep in mind that you are a smallish shopkeeper playing with the big kids and you are BENEFITING from being around those big kids - upgrading is the considerate thing to do. I was taken into a main market mall when my shop was around size 350 and I got into Main Market within 2 months. Every day I trained my battlepet, did my 10x kitchen quests and my scratchcards - and every neopoint i had leftover after that went to shop upgrades. I upgraded DAILY - SEVERAL TIMES daily. Why? Because it was only fair. A Main Market Mall did me a HUGE favour by letting me in their mall - I knew I was benefiting from the np that my mallmates had spent on their shops and that doing my best to get to Main as quickly as possible was The Right Thing To Do {tm}.

Thank you again for the replies. I will wait to see what my mall owner thinks of this. Hopefully, she will tell me what is on her mind and not what she thinks I want to hear. This morning, I actually made up my mind on buying the item but looking at the replies that were made, I'm looking to change my decision again. It's really a bummer to be in this position lacking with neopoints for upgrades and things that I want to buy. If I had a choice, I would do both at the same time. Now come to think about it, I do have some rares that would give me enough neopoints to do both but that would mean depleting the items that I cherish the most. Hm, I actually have enough rares to give me the remaining 12.5M for an upgrade to main market. But again, that would mean I don't have any more investments in the future. If I would be looking for that leap, it would mean that I would have to price all my rares way under the trading post price for quick sell and I don't know if that would be a good move. If I do decide to leap to main market size 601 or something, is this a good enough hut positioning to even begin with? Anyways, there's another side of me wanting to buy that item now. And the argument here is that since my next 2 goals is to jump to two huts, I could use 2-4 months more to get those neopoints (7-12.5M) to reach the main market size needed for my mall. But that would mean that I would only reach main market size in the year of 2010? Would this be too long? Can someone tell me how long they have been malling and how long it took them to get to main market size from the point they have started malling to the point they have gotten 600+ shop size? So much things running in my mind. Neopets doesn't seem as simple as it may seem when I first started.
