CPU Usage 100% (and not system idle process)
Half price day was a mess for me -- my computer froze for 10-15 seconds each time I clicked anything.... grrrrrr that was painful! I was sure I had a virus so this am I started in safe mode, ran all of my virus & malware & spyware scans to find nothing. I have been watching my performance through the Windows Task Manager and my services.exe is running anywhere from 50 - 99 constantly! I thought the services.exe is supposed to manage the transition between programs. I looked it up and there are a lot of links to people who seem to think this "services.exe" is a virus. winss.exe is running 19-35 constantly too. (will continue my rant/question)

Before I spend another 6-8 hours on a computer glitch/virus whatever I wanted to see if anyone has had the computer freezing (literally gaps in the Task Manager computer performance graph) and the other things I have described. I have so many things to do this evening other than camp out on the puter! This kind of thing takes me forever because it is trial and error when I don't have a virus name or something to look up. Help! Dell Dimension 3000 :( Windows XP, service pack 3 Pentium 4 2.8GHz 1 G Ram I have run CCleaner; Malwarebytes; Norton; Windows Defender; Symmantec Corp Edition; Registry Cleaner <-- LOL! that's a lot! The only thing that has helped (so I could restock the 197 items that sold the last two days and write this) is changing the priority of FireFox to above normal in the Task Manager. I tried changing the priority of the services.exe but it is a vital service that I can't change.... ~ Mimi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Mimi's Ménagerie ~ http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=temps_bons&misc

Another tid-bit: Programs just stop responding. The computer will freeze (can't do a thing, click on aything, rollover anything, nothing) so I will start trying to see what I may have open that I can close. Firefox has (Not Responding) above the main toolbar; any program I do manage to try to close (right click on taskbar at the bottom and click close) says, "Not Responding" and I have to end program. It does seem to get progressively worse -- meaning I set FF as higher than normal priority and it was fine but now it's been about an hour and it is starting to freeze again. Edit: Running Daily Scan while I was doing laundry....I came back to this: Files scanned: 48 Time Elapsed: 91 minutes 54 seconds Are you kidding me?! If you guys could keep this in the active forums until late this evening so our late night visitors see it, I would appreciate it. I'm not a super pro on this issue but today is java and windows update day and your trouble might be caused because one of the updates didn't finish the way it should. See it there are any update files running actively. If so hit end process on those and restart your pooter and connection. Before you reboot, check if any of your protecion programms has SUN java auto_installer disabled. If so set it on enable/allow. If there are no updates actively running AND you have java auto_installer enabled everywhere AND you can't find virusses of any kind, most likely you'll need to repair your registry to (hopefully) solve your prob. Wish you good luck!

Services.exe shows in mine but when I had problems I had services.exe plus one called service.exe running services.exe should only be located under the C:/Windows/System32 folder Do a search for it and if it is located anywhere else it is more than likely an infection As Dmitri said HiJackThis is good to see what is actually running If you really get stuck and no one here can help the best place I found is the Spybot forums. They are dedicated spyware virus removal help forums and they have helped me out on a few occasions.. You could also try running and online antivirus scan through Kaspersky... It won't remove them but it lets you know for sure if you are infected

While I was in safe mode I looked to see what all was running -- in safe mode only 15 processes with only 5-11% CPU Usage and now 44 processes with 100% CPU usage (only safari open). It doesn't start at 100% immediately so I don't know what happens. I did disable several auto update services and don't know that that made a difference. I had the yellow shield for windows and 0% updates processed or whatever for over an hour (usually it works in the background and asks me to restart in a few) that took forever... but it did finally ask me to restart. Java did alright and I assume it finished? I don't *think* this is it since it started yesterday but maybe? I am wondering if there is any way to search for files by the date. I restarted the computer after my kids were on (I think two days ago) and got the "new programs have been added" in the start menu (they have been told repeatedly not to do that but they don't read popup windows and if they are "busy" they just click on OK to make it go away); I am guessing that is when it happened... Thanks so much and I'm going to try hijackthis now *fingers crossed* ~ Mimi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Mimi's Ménagerie ~ http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=temps_bons&misc
