You can also just copy and paste it (since it's text) As a side note, if you have a nasty virus, many of them will disable common antivirus programs like Norton, Mcafee, Trendmicro, etc
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecareanti-virus/thread/9f48a8ab-0d0f-4855-b382-da7433f70a6d Just found this one winss.exe Try ending the winss.exe
Thank you! I did end that process and the usage is at 36% now and I too have / had that Microsoft Windows OneCare Live program. I have been trying to delete it because my 90 days is up on the free download. I used the control panel to remove it but noticed that my C:\program files still has a Microsoft Windows OneCare Live folder... I ended the process and it restarted so maybe I have to keep ending it? Is there any way to make that permanent? I can't set the priority but I can end the process.... Okay, now how to get rid of the thing? You would know it would be a MS product! That program helped me find 150 viruses/malware programs on my computer 3 months ago and now it's the problem, geez! ~ Mimi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Mimi's Ménagerie ~ http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=temps_bons&misc

A Loooong time ago I downloaded Bonzi Buddy. I really don't remember why I got it, guess because it's a Purple Gorilla that talked to you on your desktop. I got sick of him and could NOT get rid of him. After lightning struck near our house and fried the internet card in the windows 98, we took it to a computer guy and he deleted it. Bonzi was making the whole computer slow down.

At first glance, i dont see anything strange but WOW all that bloatware. Onecare and Symantec alone must be slowing down the computer tons. and it looks like hijackthis got bought out by TrendScam. That program probably sucks now.

That program probably sucks now.
I couldn't agree more about the amount of crap on my computer! I like a clean machine and I have tons of programs and add-ons (?) that I never use and don't even know what they do! My problem is knowing what I can delete and what I should save. There are so many things that are needed to run some piece of some random software - like bonjour (?) and another codec thingy. I wish I had the patience to research all of these programs but tweezing through such mumbo jumbo trying to answer the question, is just annoying. At some point I deleted some essential part of photoshop that made it no longer work and I used that program all the time. Same with Corel Draw. That experience has convinced me I do not know what I am doing. And yeah, Symmantec is huge as well as Adobe & Quckbooks (I never use those but I don't want to nix them because it costs so much if I ever wanted/needed it for work or some project (I am an independent consultant). My disk space is down to 12% free and that worries me! Okay, I am literally falling asleep at the computer so I am going to bed. I haven't had a problem with freezing since I stopped winss or whatever it was the second time. I'll pick this up tomorrow. Any advice on that bloatware and space hogging software that costs over 300 US/each would be appreciated. I wish I could bake you a cake or something for even taking the time to look at all my mess. I would love to take the blame for the programs but the system came pre-built and a friend of a friend helped me move my files from an old computer to these...and they added a few things they thought I'd like... ~ Mimi ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Mimi's Ménagerie ~ http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=temps_bons&misc

You know these days you can get 1TB off data for less than $100, if you don't feel comfortable deleting stuff, buy one of these and stick it in your PC (or get someone else to). As for your problem, make sure to do a full scan on spybot, try cleaning apps like ccleaner/easycleaner, these will remove LOTS (sometimes GB's) of rubbish data, install a good AV (sorry can't help with this, I don't use AV lolz), also a defrag will help (general performance). Otherwise, a format would be good :D

I agree with _chaostx, get an external hard drive if you can, and put anything (like movies, music, games, Adobe and whatever else was huge on your computer) that would slow down the computer on there. This helps a TON. However, most of them are USB port based, and I've found that if I leave it plugged in while I'm trying to stock it slows down the computer a ton. I just leave it unplugged when nobody's using it. :) Plus, the extra storage space always come in handy, not to mention it will help free up some of that space. Running disk cleanup first, then disk defragment, and then whatever virus/spyware scans you have would be a good thing to do. We make sure to do this at least once a month. It always helps clear out at least 5-6 gigs of unnecessary stuff. And I too second CCleaner. Oh! Bonzi Buddy! My 6th grade Social Studies teacher had that on her computer, I always wanted to find out what it was and get it, but I never could figure out what it was, lol. Now I'm glad I didn't get it. *** Grooming, wearables, backgrounds, clothes, Fire & Air Faerie Quest items! http://www.neopets.com/browseshop.phtml?owner=nioe_yemar&misc Owner of The Rainbow Fields Mall & Celestial Colours Guild!

Not sure if it will help but you can Google a small program (freeware) yes its safe called Startup When you install it all it does is add an icon in your Control Panel and when you open the program it allows you to control the programs set to start at bootup.. Not sure if the OneCare will be listed but I use it to stop a lot of unnecessary programs from running.. ie nero, quicktime, google updater etc etc.. It won't stop the programs from running when you call for them so I also disable the startup of my printer services as well..

It sounds like you could be running two malware protection programs that are conflicting with each other. Some programs try to cover all the bases (such as virus protection, firewall, email scanner, etc), and you may have one of these programs running along with another program that's trying to perform the same task. When this happens, they 'fight' over each other to get priority and it takes up a huge amount of system resources; quickly taking you up to 100% CPU usage. If you've done scans and haven't found any viruses, try disabling them and do a quick google search for problems with the combination of malware protection programs you are running. Nortons has always been a definite 'no' for me due to this problem. Even by itself, it seems to hog system resources. At the moment I'm using VIPRE which I barely notice running. It's a very good system that is great for detection, prevention, and gentle on your CPU/memory. Otherwise, it's quite likely you need to do some sort of registry clean / defragment / reinstallation. If you've not reinstalled windows (on a clean harddrive) anytime in the last year, your system slows down due to the number of programs installed, uninstalled, and the fragments in data allocation. Said differently, every program you install gets put into a registry and windows assesses this to determine where programs are and how to run them. Even when you uninstall programs, much of the registry info remains there. This is problematic when you (for example) install new/different codecs, virus protection, updates, add-ons, etc. The links connecting programs can get crossed if they haven't been programmed perfectly, and the number of registry items can slow things down a great deal. Your hard drive stores data in a sequence; from the widest part of the disk (picture a CD) towards the center (this is why it's always best to install on a new/empty hard drive; the widest part of the disk is also the fastest as it spins - meaning your computer will load that little bit quicker). Over time the hard drive is taken up with data which is written closer to the center of the disk. When you delete items, new data is inserted into those spaces, and broken to be continued at the widest available space. The more often you uninstall/remove/delete items and put new things on to you hard drive, the more fragmented the data becomes. The more fragmented it is, the more places your computer needs to visit when retrieving information. This makes things slow. RegCure is a good registry cleaner. And your computer has an inbuilt defragmenter; right click on your harddrive in windows explorer, click properties, select the tools tab, then choose defragment now. You should be able to work out the rest. But the best solution is to back up all your data onto a new partition/hard drive, then format and reinstall a new copy of windows. Once that's done, run Nortons Ghost (the only product by Nortons I tolerate) and make a back up of the partition. Install all your drivers and necessary basic windows items that you always use, then make another back up with Nortons Ghost. This way, if anything goes wrong, you can spend all of 5 minutes 're-ghosting' and be up and running with a clean slate all ready to go. Some friends of mine have seperate versions of windows they use for work and games; simply re-ghosting each time they need to. If you install a bad program, you can revert back to a working windows. If you get a nasty virus, you simply ghost it and everything is good again. Anyhow.. this has turned into a novel. Let me know if you have any trouble with what's written above.
