CPU Usage 100% (and not system idle process)

Half price day was a mess for me -- my computer froze for 10-15 seconds each time I clicked anything.... grrrrrr that was painful! I was sure I had a virus so this am I started in safe mode, ran all of my virus & malware & spyware scans to find nothing. I have been watching my performance through the Windows Task Manager and my services.exe is running anywhere from 50 - 99 constantly! I thought the services.exe is supposed to manage the transition between programs. I looked it up and there are a lot of links to people who seem to think this "services.exe" is a virus. winss.exe is running 19-35 constantly too. (will continue my rant/question)

And the sad thing is that microsoft aren't really looking after our best interests. They leave loopholes in their security, include malware in their programs, and collect personal details about their users.

I don't think it's fair to get upset over how much space an update or something might take, when you have 5GB's of hard drive space. Windows98 or 95 was probably the last MS OS' designed for such small amounts of space, we're already going through terabytes of data for personal use, and soon we'll be in the petabyte stage (1 million GB's). Google is already processing over 20 PB's of data daily.

My first computer was an Apple IIc - it was lovely! and it still is, because every now and then we pull it out and play Sammy Lightfoot, or Below the Root, and it works perfectly. :D I learned Applesoft BASIC and spreadsheets with it, and my husband programmed in Assembly language and machine code on it with the help of Beagle Bros. It had a mouse, and was practically a notebook, since it was so small and light, and of course had no hard drive. lol

Thanks for that address EWP! I will close FF and some part of it stays open so that if I try to open it again I get a message saying it is still running. It doesn't show up in Task Manager -- I solve that problem by logging out and logging back in. I have 33G of HD space instead of 5 -- Man, that is much better but still small compared to others here. I am going through trying to delete personal files and will attempt to move these folders to disk: Quickbooks (663MB) Adobe (626MB) There is another folder in my Program Files called Common Files (1.3GB) that has Adobe and Intuit (Quick Books) folders. (see screenie) What in the world is this folder? Is it the folder that can be used by all users on my CPU, i.e. the different profiles on my CPU. Should I include the contents of the folders pertaining to the programs I am moving on the disks I am creating? Like this: Disk 1: Quickbooks (663MB) + Common Files\Intuit\Quickbooks (30MB) Disk 2: Adobe (626MB) + Common Files\Adobe (19MB) + Adobe Systems Shared (68KB) Crud! This is what drives me crazy about moving a program off my C:\ to disk -- why can't they keep all of their files in one folder? I just tried to create a PDF file from a word file (the screenie I made) and got an error message which asked if I wanted to start the fix mode for Adobe -- then it accessed some C:\Windows\Installer file... Let's say I do move the program folder to disk (The c:\Program Files\ insert program name here). When I try to use it later from the disk and it needs a piece that I forgot to move will it be able to find it? Program files are installed to that directory and if you remove them to disk they will more than likely not work. I would personally leave everything in the C/Program Files and C/Windows where they are.. If you right click on C Drive in My Computer and go properties.. how much free space do you have. If you have enough I would just backup your personal files There is also another good site for older program versions http://www.oldversion.com/

You seem to have alot of business related programs on there (Quickbooks, Adobe Acrobat ) :o Those things take up quite a bit of space but since they're on there, I'm guessing you or someone in your household uses them. And 30g isnt bad. You have me beat :P

I just hit ctrl+alt+del, and hit start task manager (on Vista anyway). It's not on task manager but after I close the manager and click firefox again, it starts right back up. Sometimes after I get the message saying its already running, I just close that little box and click firefox again. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Then I revert back to step one, ctrl+alt+del.
